When St. Matthews houses were built
St. Matthews was farm country for a long time, famous for potatoes. The city says the St. Matthews Produce Exchange, formed by 200 farmers in 1910, grew into the second largest potato shipper in the world before it closed in 1946. The Shelbyville Turnpike had opened through the area back in 1832.
Then came the houses. The city lists building booms in the late 1920s, again after the 1937 Ohio River flood, and again from 1946 on. St. Matthews became a city in 1950. Houses from the booms of the late 1920s and of 1937 to 1941 are now more than 80 years old. Doug Durbin usually goes on site to give an accurate quote, so he sees an older bathroom or kitchen before he prices the work.
Toilets, water heaters and drains in St. Matthews
We replace and repair toilets. The EPA says toilets are nearly 30 percent of a home’s indoor water use, and older models can use as much as 6 gallons a flush. A WaterSense model uses 1.28 gallons or less.
We love water heaters! We repair and replace gas and electric tank units from Rheem, Ruud, A.O. Smith and Bradford White, and you can read how a water heater replacement goes before you call. For sinks and tubs, see drain cleaning.
“Called before they came, assessed the situation, went and got parts and all was done in about an hour.”

How much does it cost to replace a toilet in St. Matthews?
Doug Durbin gives you the price on site, because the right number depends on your bathroom. What changes the price is the toilet you choose, how the old one is set, the shape of the flange and shutoff valve, and how easy the space is to reach.
Will a new toilet use less water?
It can. The federal standard is 1.6 gallons a flush, and older toilets can use far more. The EPA says replacing old toilets saves a home nearly 13,000 gallons of water a year.
Can you clear a slow kitchen sink?
Yes. We clean kitchen sink, bathroom sink, tub and shower drains, and Doug will tell you plainly what he finds.
Can you call before you get to my house?
Yes. We can call you to tell you we are on the way if you need to leave work. You also get a two-hour arrival window, so you know when to be home.
You can learn about city services, Brown Park and local events at the City of St. Matthews website.
