How old are Highlands houses?

Highlands, Louisville on Google Maps

The National Park Service file for the Highlands Historic District counts about 3,000 contributing buildings. It calls the Highlands one of Louisville’s earliest suburbs, with most streets laid out by 1880 and a few houses from the 1850s. Building went on for more than 80 years, from Italianate and Victorian homes to Bungalows and 1920s Craftsman and Revival houses.

The old Bardstown Road Pike was the spine of that growth, running along the ridge of the Highlands toward Bardstown. Cherokee Park, the eastern park in Louisville’s Olmsted system, came out of Frederick Law Olmsted’s 1891 talk to city leaders about building a park system.

Our office is in this same ZIP, in an older part of Louisville.

“We live in a very old home and they were knowledgeable and efficient.”

Water heaters, faucets and toilets in the Highlands

We love water heaters! We repair and replace gas and electric tank water heaters from Rheem, Ruud, A.O. Smith, Bradford White and other brands. In an older basement, the job sometimes means moving the heater, not only swapping it. Our page on water heater repair and replacement covers how that goes.

“Doug did a great job moving and replacing our water heater in our older basement.”

Old faucets matter in a neighborhood this age, and Doug is very knowledgeable about fixing them. See faucet repair and replacement for Delta, Moen and older fixtures, and toilet replacement when a toilet runs, rocks or keeps leaking. Our guide to plumbing in older Louisville homes explains what to expect before you call.

How a Highlands plumbing visit works

Since our office is in 40205, the drive to your house is short. You call (502) 266-9408, and we usually answer live. Doug Durbin usually goes on site to look at the job and give you an accurate quote.

You get a two-hour arrival window instead of a whole day at home. Doug and Tina Durbin founded the company in May 2000.

“That kind of experience and expertise is irreplaceable.”

Questions from the Highlands and Belknap

Have a question that is not here? Call the office.

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Can you fix the original faucets in an old Highlands house?

Often, yes. Old faucets are Doug’s strength. He looks at yours before he prices a repair or a new faucet.

Can you move a water heater in an older basement?

Yes. Moving and replacing a water heater in an older basement is work we have done in houses like these. Doug looks at the basement first, then quotes the job. In Kentucky every water heater replacement needs a permit and an inspection through the state Division of Plumbing.

Do you work beyond the Highlands and Belknap?

Yes. We do a lot of work close to our office, and we are happy to go to any area in Jefferson County.
